It was the Ancient Greeks who established mosaic as an art form and, although the techniques have existed for 4000 years and been embraced by many cultures, mosaic-making is still popular worldwide today. There’s a world of difference between the patterns of the ancient Greeks, the religious motifs of the Byzantine period, the intricacies of Islamic designs and the playfulness of Gaudi.
Mosaics can be environmentally friendly using recycled materials and by preserving treasured items in a new mosaic. I use traditional glass and ceramic tiles, smalti and often incorporate fabric, jewellery, beads, crockery and other mixed media items. Mosaics are extremely durable and resilient. They are suitable for indoor and outdoor use, for small or large items. Designs can be ancient, contemporary, abstract, subtle or dramatic - every piece is unique. My aim is to open people’s minds to the variety and varied forms a mosaic may take. My work offers a modern take on a traditional art form.
